In 2009, in a misguided attempt to boost user growth, social networking site Tagged sent millions of deceptive e-mails that misled recipients into giving the company access to their contact lists. As users became aware of the deception, Tagged’s reputation and pocketbook both suffered. In addition to being called “the world’s most annoying website” by Time, Tagged racked up over $1.4 million in fines after being sued by at least three states.
