Muslim civil rights leaders expressed anger at Facebook for removing posts that sought to highlight and counter hateful rhetoric and threats. In multiple instances, Muslim civil rights leaders had their posts removed and accounts suspended for posting about threats received or expressing political speech on the social media platform. Facebook’s reporting system provided these users little in the way of explanation for the content removals. Critics pointed out how Facebook’s misapplication of its community standards harmed the communities the standards were designed to protect and how such practices undermined Mark Zuckerberg’s goal of creating a “peaceful and safe” environment for Muslim communities on the service.
