What’s now clear for Clearview AI is that its face surveillance product – built by improperly scraping billions of images from the internet without people’s knowledge or consent and used by government for secret surveillance – has been hit with very expensive privacy lawsuits. It’s already been forced to settle a lawsuit from the ACLU and agree to be “permanently banned, nationwide, from making its faceprint database available to most businesses and other private entities.” In a separate consumer privacy suit, Clearview has agreed to a settlement that could cost the company more than $50 million. Another lawsuit brought by activists is moving in California state court and seeks compensatory damages.
