The FTC banned data broker Mobilewalla from selling sensitive location information after finding that: (1) Mobilewalla improperly collected this information from third parties without verifying user consent; (2) used that information to categorize users (e.g. “pregnant women” or “Hispanic churchgoers”) and identify sensitive user activity (e.g. visiting health clinics or attending protests); and (3) sold that information to additional third parties. Mobilewalla is also banned from misrepresenting how it collects, maintains, uses, deletes, or discloses personal information and must delete all historic location information.
