In 2012, Twitter faced allegations of preferential treatment of NBC, which had partnered with Twitter to promote the Olympics, after it encouraged NBC to complain about journalist Guy Adams’ tweets and then immediately suspended his account after NBC complained. Although Twitter quickly apologized and reinstated Adams’ account, it still “found itself in a deeply unfamiliar situation: as the subject of one of the firestorms of indignation that characterizes the platform, but which are usually directed at others."
