Note-taking service Evernote faced swift backlash from users and the press when it announced that employees would review users’ notes as part of the company’s machine learning efforts designed to improve the company’s product. Reporters labeled the change “startling” and “wacky,” noting that users would be forced to opt out to prevent humans from reviewing their private notes. This press, along with a chorus of user criticism, forced Evernote's CEO to admit, "we screwed up, and I want to be really clear about that." Going forward, the company promised to provide users with the choice to opt-in to the new feature.
