OpenAI is facing multiple expensive lawsuits asserting copyright infringement, consumer protection claims, and privacy violations stemming from the company’s actions scraping the internet for personal information to train its artificial intelligence model. The company faces exposure both for its own actions and to pay the legal fees for business users hit with copyright lawsuits for use of its products. The exact extent of OpenAI’s full potential liability from these cases is unclear, but the New York Times alone alleges that OpenAI is responsible for “billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages” related to copying and use of the newspapers’ copyrighted work.
